Between Halloween and the Christmas lights, most of the town's indoor stops in November work on a schedule: a downtown bakery that closes by early afternoon, a museum you book ahead, a free admission day that falls on a Tuesday, and a Chamber holiday gathering that starts at 8 a.m. If you know the hours, the stretch from Oct. 31 to early December has plenty in it. If you wait for a Saturday afternoon, most of these doors will already be closed.
Saturday Night First, Then the Clock Changes
The season begins with an evening. Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, so the Village of Manteno extended trick-or-treating to 4 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 31. The Daily Journal reported that the change followed requests from residents.
That Saturday evening wraps up a busy run of downtown Halloween events. The Main Street Trick or Treat, hosted by the Village, the Rotary Club of Manteno and the Manteno Chamber of Commerce, filled The Square on 2nd at 50 W. Second St. on Oct. 24. The Manteno Public Library held its Halloween Ghost Hunt & Storytime for kindergarten through fourth grade on Oct. 28. After Halloween, there's no outdoor programming on the calendar until December, and the dates that remain mostly fall on weekdays and mornings.
Here are the dated events between now and the Christmas celebration:
| Date | What | Where | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sat., Oct. 31 | Halloween trick-or-treating, extended hours | Village-wide | 4 to 8 p.m. |
| Tue., Nov. 3 | Free admission day | Vintage Purse Museum, 3 Diversatech Drive | By tour booking |
| Thu., Nov. 12 | Illinois Libraries Present: Dr. Eve L. Ewing | Manteno Public Library, via Zoom | 7 to 8 p.m. |
| Tue., Dec. 1 | Free admission day | Vintage Purse Museum | By tour booking |
| Wed., Dec. 2 | Women Supporting Women: Holiday Mingle & Jingle | Twisted Cupcake, 119 N. Main St. | 8 to 9 a.m. |
| Sat., Dec. 5 | Manteno Christmas Celebration, expected | Downtown Manteno | 4 p.m. |
Two of those six dates are Tuesdays, and one starts before most offices open. That's how the whole season tends to run.
Downtown Runs on Morning Hours
Start at Twisted Cupcake at 119 N. Main St. Its posted hours are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, with no Sunday or Monday hours listed. The case holds cupcakes, cookies, cake pops, muffins, cinnamon rolls, doughnuts and pies, and there's coffee and tea. It also takes custom cake orders, which matters as holiday gatherings start piling up in December.
The Manteno Chamber's own holiday event follows those hours. Its Women Supporting Women branch holds the Holiday Mingle & Jingle at Twisted Cupcake on Wednesday, Dec. 2, from 8 to 9 a.m., according to the Chamber's event listing. A business networking event over coffee before work fits a Main Street that's busiest early in the day.
A few blocks away, Sunflower Vintage & Boutique at 50 N. Locust St. is new this year. The Manteno Chamber held its ribbon cutting and open house on June 30, 2026. It's an antique and gift shop, which makes it an obvious early stop for holiday shopping. Bring cash or have Zelle or Venmo ready, since the shop's listing says those are the only payment methods it accepts.
A Saturday downtown in November comes down to timing. Get coffee and a pastry before 1 p.m., stop at Locust Street, and you're done before lunch is over.
The Museum Opens by Appointment
The most unusual room in town is out on Diversatech Drive. The Vintage Purse Museum at 3 Diversatech Drive holds thousands of vintage fashion accessories along with vintage comics, a veterans' exhibit, Barbie items, an art gallery, a gift shop and a coffee bar. Kimberly Crothers founded the museum and serves as its president and executive director. In July, the Kankakee County Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting to mark its first anniversary, which makes it one of the newer cultural venues in the county.
It doesn't post walk-in hours. Visits are scheduled through the museum's private tour form, which asks for at least 24 hours' notice. Kankakee County's visitor bureau lists the museum with a 48-hour notice request, so booking two days ahead covers both. Admission is a donation paid when you arrive:
- $15 per person
- $50 per family of up to five
- $150 for an annual membership
- Free on the first Tuesday of each month
The museum says proceeds support its charitable mission of creating jobs for people with disabilities. The free days this season are Nov. 3 and Dec. 1, both Tuesdays. A family of five pays $50 on any other day, so a weekday afternoon off is worth the planning. If you have relatives coming for Thanksgiving, a booked tour fits easily into the long weekend.
The Late Hours Are on Spruce Street
If you want indoor time after dinner, Manteno's main option is on the south side of town. TruGolf Links at 450 S. Spruce St., Unit H, opened in July 2025 as the first TruGolf Links franchise in Illinois. It has four TruGolf Premium simulators and a multi-sport arcade. The venue offers simulator golf year-round, plus leagues, lessons and private events, and you can book tee times online.
Its posted hours fill the gaps downtown leaves open. It's open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. It's open on Sundays and Mondays, when Twisted Cupcake is closed, and on Saturday night, long after Main Street's 1 p.m. close. With four bays, a group outing or a winter golf habit goes better with a reservation, the same way the museum does.
One Main Street Storefront Is Still Changing
The schedule downtown could get its first evening anchor soon. In July, WVLI 92.7 reported that Frank's Appliance Center and Sleepsource would close their Manteno storefront after July 18 so their team could work under one roof at the Bradley location. The same day, the Lush wine bar in Kankakee announced it would move to Manteno, aiming for an August opening and planning to keep its Kankakee location open.
Lush Vine now lists 51 N. Main St. in Manteno as its address. As of this fall, The Bourbs, the Kankakee County local news site, lists the Manteno location's opening as unconfirmed, with a target of fall 2026 and no exact date. The Manteno Chamber's member listing describes the business as curated wines, wine cocktails, craft beer and shareable bites. Manteno hours haven't been posted. Until they are, check the business directly before you head over.
If it opens before the holidays, Lush Vine would be the first place on this list that keeps downtown open into the evening on weeknights. It sits on the same block as Twisted Cupcake.
Two Weeknights and One December Saturday Left
The library adds a Thursday evening that doesn't require leaving home. The Manteno Public Library's Illinois Libraries Present event, "Words, Power, and Community: Dr. Eve L. Ewing," runs on Zoom from 7 to 8 p.m. The library's adult events page lists it on Nov. 12, but the event page itself shows a Nov. 12 to 20 range. Check the listing for the final details.
The Bourbs' events calendar lists the Manteno Christmas Celebration for Saturday, Dec. 5, at 4 p.m. in downtown Manteno, with a tree lighting, Santa visits, holiday vendors and family activities. The Village's own Christmas in Manteno page still shows last year's Dec. 6, 2025 event, so the 2026 date isn't official until the Village updates it. Last year's event was also on the first Saturday of December, so Dec. 5 lines up with past timing.
If you're spending more time indoors this season and starting to think about the house you're spending it in, Leanne Provost is glad to talk it through over coffee on Main Street. Schedule a free consultation, or get your instant home valuation before the holiday calendar fills up.
